Mike Oldfield became world famous for the instrumental progressive folk album ‘Tubular Bells’ – the first release by Virgin Records.
The financial success of ‘Tubular Bells’ alone allowed the new company for over a decade to take risks on hundreds of new acts other record companies would not touch – including the Sex Pistols/Public Image Limited, the Flying Lizards, the Human League, Culture Club, Skids, Poly Styrene’s X-Ray Spex, and XTC.
Contrary to the urban myth, the album was not ‘made famous’ by the horror movie The Exorcist – it was already a major seller across the UK and Europe months before it was partially used by it.
Oldfield also had massive success with the albums ‘Hergest Ridge’, ‘Ommadawn’, ‘Five Miles Out’ and ‘Crises’, and three times came close to topping the singles charts with three famous songs: the Christmas tune ‘In Dulce Jubilo’, ‘Portsmouth’ and ‘Moonlight Shadow’. He also enjoyed success with covers of Abba’s ‘Arrival’ and the Shadows’ ‘Wonderful Land’.
